7.  True or false, cauda equina syndrome following continuous spinal anesthesia occurs ONLY when spinal microcatheters are used?

Answer: False

There are reports of cauda equina syndrome occurring with continuous spinal anesthesia before spinal microcatheters were introduced.  In addition, in the case report by Rigler, et al on cauda equina syndrome that occurred with spinal microcatheters included one case of cauda equina syndrome that occurred with an epidural catheter used for continuous spinal anesthesia.
